Portugal & Galicia - October 5th - 14th, 2019

This trip offers a wonderful overview of the best of Galicia and northern Portugal, including two wine regions of Galicia, the Vinho Verde region on the way to the wonderful Douro (and the legendary Quinta do Vesuvio), the vibrant city of Porto, the bold wines of Luis Pato in the Bairrada, finishing in the cosmopolitan capital of Lisbon. Magnificent scenery, great contrasts between wine styles and nationalities, Celtic Spain and five wine regions in nine days, this is always one of our favourite trips. What’s not to love?

Tour Hosts:

SIMON MCGOOKIN

Simon has a lifelong passion for wine and travel, stemming from a visit to the Barossa Valley when he lived and worked in Australia as a teenager. Since then he has visited most of the top wine regions of the world. He studied at Queen’s University Belfast and had a career in IT and professional rugby management before joining Iberian Wine Tours.  After successfully completing the WSET Advanced Certificate in Wines and Spirits he has worked closely with Jeremy Shaw in overseeing the growth of the company.

As a keen golfer, cyclist and hiker he combines his interest in sport with his love of wine, gastronomy and culture. He knows that the diverse regions of Spain, Portugal and South America offer all of these pleasures in abundance. Simon particularly enjoys the red wines of the Douro, Uco Valley and the Ribeira Sacra, his white preferences being the aged whites from Rioja and the Albarinos and Godellos of Galicia.

Simon loves to meet people from around the globe and takes great pleasure in sharing his knowledge of the regions and their personalities with his groups.

JACKIE THURNVALSASSINA

Born in Perth, Western Australia, Jackie had strong connections to Europe through her father which gave her a love of all things European and of course, a desire to travel. Eventually, she met the father of her two daughters in Timor, and he being Portuguese, it wasn´t long before they packed their bags and moved to a small village in Northern Portugal back in 1981.

The language barrier was initially a challenge but getting a job locally helped to break that and today she is a fluent speaker. Over the years, she couldn’t help but fall in love with this beautiful country with its rich history and traditions to cherish her own story here.

She began a career in the wine trade over 25 years ago, when a member of the Symington family asked her if she would like to join their team. The position involved taking care of all their Visitor Planning as their Public Relations person and she never looked back.

Regular visits to the Douro valley became part of her life, strengthening her background on the history of Port, the culture and the way of life in that region. Her dream is to have a home in the Douro Valley, enjoying the solitude of the region that contrasts with her busy life in Porto.

She also writes an English blog on Portuguese culture – Portugal Untouched, is a member of a hiking group and a huge animal lover helping to run an animal welfare shelter.
